The outcome of Saturday, March 28 presidential election, won by General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) of the All Progressive Congress (APC), is beginning to upturn the political calculation of Delta State governorship election, as politicians seek realignment in the state.
The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which have Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and Labour Party (LP)’s Chief Great Ogboru as its flag bearers, are contending with fresh challenges, posed by the emergence of Buhari at the centre, as the stage is set for huge realignment with Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, the APC candidate in the state.
Among the early birds nursing defection is Chief Ayiri Emami, an Itsekiri youth leader and the proponent of the Tony Obuh project during the last PDP primaries, who the grapevine said may have pitched tent with Emerhor, with several others still negotiating to follow suit.
Sources said that the proposed visit of Buhari to Asaba, this week, may be the game changer for Emerhor who, until now, had lost hope in the race, following the obscurity of his party in the state.
But recent moves by a handful of PDP faithful set to defect to the APC, thus abandoning the Okowa/Utuaro’s ship, which until last Saturday, appeared to be cruising home unchallenged, is giving Emerhor hope. But Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who had been severally accused of not showing commitment to the Okowa’s ticket, has been upset by the development and is already pulling all strings to ensure PDP victory at the polls.
