Tom Okpe, Abuja

Minority Caucus Leader in the House of Representatives yesterday described former Military President, Gen Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida as a noble and dignified leader who has contributed to the greatness and development of Nigeria.

Gen Babanhida took over power from the Military junta of Maj Gen Muhammadu Buhari in a palace coup in August 27th, 1985 announcing himself as Military President, ruling for nine years.

He later stepped aside for the Chief Ernest Shonikan interim Government on the 26th August, 1993 after declaring the famous June 12th, 1993 Presidential election adjudged to be the most free, fairest and transparent election ever conducted in Nigeria and alleged to be won by late Chief MKO Abiola.

Ndudi Elumelu made the remarks, while congratulating Gen Babangida in a statement as he, (Babangida) attains the octogenarian age of 80 years.

He said: “Gen. Babangida, a noble and dignified leader, an exceptionally detribalized statesman, whose commitment towards the unity, stability, national cohesion and economic development of our nation has remained unwavering.

“Over the years, Gen. Babangida, whose legacies in office cut across all sectors of our national life, has particularly remained a quintessence of humility, tolerance and nationalism in the national quest for mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, political stability and economic prosperity of all.

“We are particularly grateful to God for keeping Gen. Babangida in good health and sound mind, as he enters into this new phase in his life, so that our nation and humanity at large, will continue to benefit from his wealth of experience, especially at this critical time in our national history.

“Our caucus felicitates with Gen. Babangida on this momentous occasion in his life, praying that God continue to bless him with many more years in good health and happiness.”
