‘Nigeria may introduce security tax’

All over the world, Security Tax is being used to fund and maintain security in most countries. The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Nigeria Army, Hon. Rimamnde Shawulu Kwewum disclosed this in Umuahia while leading other members of the committee on a courtesy call on the state Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu as part of their oversight tour of army formations in the country.

Hon. Kwewum disclosed that there is a lot to be achieved in security in Nigeria, adding that all the Nigeria Army is battling with include international respect, and therefore is coming to support the civil authority.

According to him, the nature of security all over the world has changed, hence the need to find a way to assist the Federal Government to fund security in the country.

Nigeria, he said “should find a way of sponsoring security like through Tourism tax to support security agencies in the country”, expressing also his belief in whatever will be done to save the Nigerian environment.

The House Committee Chairman further revealed that the committee was on their way to 14 Brigade formation of the Nigeria Army at Ohafia to look at infrastructure there to enable the committee make input into the federal budget process on the barrack’s behalf to the National Assembly.

While in Ohafia, Hon. Kwewum said the House Committee would be meeting with officers and men of the brigade to ascertain their challenges to be inputted into the national budget.

He used the opportunity to felicitate with Gov. Ikpeazu over his assistance to the military in the state.

Responding, the Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu pleaded with the Nigeria Army authorities to look at the 14 Brigade, Ohafia barracks and do more for it.

The Governor regretted that many years after establishment, it was only last year that the barracks was gazette with its infrastructure not updated and pleaded for more government assistance to the barracks.
