The Chairman, Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Musa Dikko, says the council will partner with the University of Abuja to improve skills of teachers in the area.
Dikko said this on Thursday when the Vice Chancellor of the university led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the council.
He said that there was the need for the teachers to upgrade their teaching skills, adding that it would give them a brighter knowledge that would make more impact in the future of their pupils and students.
“In this council, the leadership is ready to learn always, we take education seriously, because this council is home to a lot of students as we have so many schools here.
“We take time to verify and review these schools and also ensure that our teachers are on ground and doing what they are supposed to.
“Therefore, the Head of Department of Education must by next year, work and ensure that the teachers within this council are enrolled in skills training at the university to upgrade their skills.’’
According to the chairman, the council will ensure that it complements the efforts of parents whose children are in the Local Education Authority (LEA) schools by providing them with learning tools.
He also said that the council was able to establish a vocational centre with the help of partners from Japan, so that children who could not afford to go to school could acquire vocational skills.
This, he said was to motivate the government and other stakeholders to help the council do more for its people, especially those at the grassroots.
Dikko also said that the council was working tirelessly to improve infrastructure in the area.
According to him, the council is already discussing with the FCT minister to ensure that the roads linking Dutse to Bwari are fixed for easy access.
Earlier, Prof. Michael Adikwu, the Vice Chancellor of the university stressed the need for teachers in the area to be trained to keep up with global trend on teaching skills.
Adikwu said that the university was adequately equipped with facilities for training, and urged the council to maximise the opportunity by enrolling the teachers in some of the training centres of the university.
“We have a Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) centre at Gosa village where different professional trainings go on and which we intend to convert to a counseling centre for greater achievements.
“The teaching hospital is also there, all these are available for your teachers on different fields.
“Learning can never stop, we have to keep going and if as a university we cannot make an impact, then we have failed.’’
