Sam Torrance has played with golf’s biggest legends from Arnold Palmer to Seve Ballesteros – but he reckons no one has ever swung a club as sweetly as Rory McIlroy.
Now he’d love to see the Northern Irish superstar use his perfect technique to swing his way into the history books next month when he goes for Grand Slam glory at Augusta National.
At just 25, McIlroy would become only the sixth player to have won all four modern Major titles if he can add the US Masters to his collection in three weeks’ time.
Such an achievement would see him ranked among some of the most iconic players ever to grace the game – Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Gene Sarazen.
But Torrance reckons he already belongs in that exalted company thanks to a flawless swing that he believes is the ultimate example of how the sport should be played.
“For him to get the Grand Slam would be extraordinary but, really, I’m not that bothered whether he wins it or not because he’s already a great.
“The way he swung the club the other week at the Cadillac Championship is as good as I’ve ever seen a golf club swung,” the Scot said.
