Ugandan judges warn government to avert strike by raising wages

Ugandan judges have issued the government 30 days grace to increase their salaries and living conditions or they will down tolls.

The judges issued the communique after a meeting over the weekend when they voted overwhelmingly for the strike on August 23 if their demands are not met.

Present at the meeting was justice minister Kahinda Otafiire who failed to convince the over 400 judges against the strike after promising to fulfil their demands in three months.

Daily Monitor, Uganda’s local media reported that the judges among other demands calls on government to bridge the salary disparity between them and government agency workers, official vehicles, medical insurance, housing and security,

The decision comes days after state prosecutors went on strike over low wages and poor working conditions leaving courts empty.

The prosecutors suspended their strike last week after the government made commitments that it will solve their issues.

They also gave the government 90 days to meet their demands or continue the strike action.
