Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, has called on corps members to remain good ambassadors of the scheme, even as he reiterated his commitment towards ensuring that the welfare and security of corps members are prioritised.
Shuaibu while addressing the newly sworn-in 2019 batch ‘B’ corps members in the Federal Capital Territory, warned against indecent dressing and unauthorised journeys which he said the scheme under his watch will not tolerate.
He advised the corps members to always be security conscious and report any case of threat to live and property to the NYSC management and security agencies.
“Please avoid unauthorised journeys. Most of the times, we record problems on accounts of unauthorised journeys. Be security conscious and avoid indecent dressing.
“Don’t tamper with the NYSC uniform except for adjustment that are not only visible but, are absolutely necessary,” the director general added.
Similarly, the FCT Permanent Secretary, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, in his address pledged the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s willingness to support, encourage as well as provide the enabling environment for corps members to carry out laudable development projects in the nation’s capital.
The permanent secretary who was represented by the acting Chairman, NYSC FCT Governing Board, Hajiya Safyia Umar, also told the corps members that the inhabitants of FCT are waiting with open arms to embrace them into their communities.
“I wish to assure you that security measures have been put in place to ensure that no harm comes to you in the cause of your service year. I must however, warn that you do not go looking for trouble by engaging in unwholesome practices.
“I therefore, urge you to comport yourselves in a discipline and well behaved manner, considering the fact that you are an agent of positive change and the future leaders of this great nation.
“I enjoin you to abide by the NYSC oath of allegiance and align yourselves with this present administration through active participation and positive contribution to programmes designed to promote national unity and development, thereby taking our nation to the next level,” she stated.
She urged the corps members to eschew all forms of ethnic and religious exclusions or rivalry within and outside the orientation camp and also to adhere to all camp rules and regulations.
Earlier, the NYSC FCT Coordinator, Hajiya Walida Isa, disclosed that the camp so far has been relatively peaceful, with the corps members demonstrating the height of discipline and tolerance.
She further charged the corps members to be extra focused on every camp activity, particularly the skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development programme describing it as their most desirable passport to self-sufficiency.
