NUPENG suspends strike in Rivers

Following the Rivers state government intervention measures into the industrial crisis between National Union of Petroleum, Energy and Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) and UNITAM Limited that led to strike action by the union in Rivers state, the chapter says it has called off its one week old strike embarked upon due to what it described as illegal sacking of its members by UNITAM Nig Ltd.

You may recall that for the past one week, there was heavy queue in filling stations across R/State including Port Harcourt, the state capital following fuel scarcity.

Briefing newsmen shortly after a successful close door meeting between the state government, the union and their employer, FEDISON, and Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), Comrade Charles Eleto, chairman of the branch union have used the occasion to call on all workers under the umbrella union to resume work immediately.

He also used the medium to commend the prompt intervention of the state governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike and promised immediate action that will clamp down on the long queue at filling stations.

Similarly, the National Secretariat of the Union, through its National Industrial Relations officer, Comrade Bassey Harry, while directing members to resume work immediately, also directed that only trucks loading for River State and Port Harcourt alone should be allowed to load within the first 72 hours, effective 7pm of June 20, 2016.
