NGO conducts inter school quiz, debate to mark World Peace Day

A Non Governmental Organization (NGO), North East Headquarters, African Mediators For Peace, Girl Child Education Advocacy Initiative has organized inter secondary school football match, quiz competition, debate and speech Presentation on ‘Peace’ to mark this years’ World Peace Day.
The event which saw participants spoke ostensibly on peace building in the country for the socio economic development of Nigeria was held on Saturday at the Zaranda Hotel Bauchi.
Speaking at the event, the Bauchi state Commissioner of Police, who was represented by ACP Nemi Iwo said that the police as peace ambassadors are working day and night in Bauchi and the country at large to ensure the safety of life and property of the citizenry.
The police commissioner who stated that no society is immune to the problems of insecurity, said that the goal of any modern society is to ensure that law and order is maintained to guarantee security of life and property, peace and stability.
“The police is a very vital organization in a state and it is their duty to maintain law and order in the society according to the constitution”.
“Peace has always been among humanities highest values. It is often said the most the most disadvantageous peace is better than the most just war hence you hear persons saying ” there is never a good war or bad peace”, he said.
He added that statutorily, police are saddled with the responsibility of prevention and detection of crimes, arrest and prosecution of offenders, preservation of law and order and many others with the view to ensure a peaceful society where people can go about their lawful engagements.
“Constitution gave the Nigeria Police the power to compel citizens to obey law and order, thereby maintaining peace in the society. In fact, all other duties listed above are summed up in this specific duty of police-which involves maintaining law and order in the society”, reiterated.
The police commissioner who noted that the world is in serious state of instability with security of lives and of property threatened by daily emergence of sophisticated warfare and munition cum religious extremism pointed out that urgent need for world peace becomes sacrosanct. He added that the Nigeria Police has over the years help maintain some degree of peace.
In his speech, the Speaker Bauchi state House of Assembly, Kawuwa Shehu Damina expressed his readiness to assist the organizers of the event in whatever capacity towards ensuring peace not only Bauchi state but the country as a whole.
Represented by Honourable Umar Sade, member Bauchi state house of Assembly, the Speaker applauded the organization for organizing the event, promising to inform the speaker about the plight of the peace mediators.
He added that the speaker is keen on activities that is geared towards the promotion of peace in the society, commending the organisers of the event for taking up the issue of building peace within the society a priority.
Daily times correspondent reports that the event was attended by representatives of Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC), Peace Corps and traditional leaders and other stakeholders in peace building.
