NAICOM, Police begin strict enforcement of compulsory insurance

BY MOTOLANI OSENI

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have launched a joint committee to enforce compulsory insurance laws across the country.

This move follows the directive by the Inspector General of Police for full enforcement of motor vehicle insurance, effective 1 February 2025.

The committee, inaugurated on 30 January 2025 at NAICOM’s headquarters in Abuja, will develop and implement strategies to ensure compliance with compulsory insurance policies as mandated by the Insurance Act and other relevant laws. It aims to foster collaboration between both institutions while providing training and capacity-building programmes for their personnel.

Led by the Deputy Commissioner for Insurance, Finance and Administration, Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, and Deputy Commissioner of Police Mallum Maina, the committee will assess existing enforcement challenges, propose solutions, and undertake public sensitisation initiatives. It will also establish protocols for joint enforcement operations and recommend policy reforms to strengthen compliance.

To facilitate smooth enforcement, key resources have been made available, including the Insurance Act 2003, the Inspector General’s directive on Third-Party Motor Insurance enforcement, and a list of licensed insurance companies authorised to conduct motor business. Vehicle owners can verify their insurance status using NAICOM’s USSD code *7292#, or by visiting www.askiid.org and www.niip.ng to confirm and purchase genuine Third-Party Motor Insurance.

With the inauguration of this joint committee, NAICOM and the NPF are set to enhance insurance compliance, ensuring that all vehicle owners fulfil their legal obligations while promoting a safer and more secure road environment.
