Low voters turnout mars Gov’ship,State Assembly election

The governorship and State House of Assemby election on Saturday recorded low turn out in all the polling units in Masaka, New Nyanya, Ado and Mararaba in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa state.
Our correspondent who visited the polling units in some of the wards in the area observed that, even though officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] came out in good time with electoral materials, voters’ turn out for the election was low compared to previous elections.
The apathy widely displayed by voters across the local government, according to some voters, who spoke with our correspondent was because of the bitter experience they had during the February 23, 2019 presidential election.
One of them, Iliasu Bulus, said people refused to turn out enmasse today because they felt their vote will not count.
“Last time that we came out to vote for the presidential election, our votes did not count, despite the time we spent under the scorching sun of that day.
“Not many people will want to go through that stress again”, Bulus noted, even as he expressed happiness on the peaceful conduct of the election in all the polling units in New Nyanya.
Our correspondent however observed that the election was peaceful, except for the low turn out, when compared to the population of voters during the presidential election.
Similar low voters turnout were witnessed in Abuja metropolitan city. At Wuse zone 3 polling unit as at 12 noon when our correspondent visited the primary school polling centre behind Road Safety National Headquarters not more than 40 voters have cast their votes.
Same low turnout were also noticed at Garki Area 11, polling Centre where over 450 voters casted their votes on February 23, Presidential election. There were less than 30 voters as at 11am when our correspondent visited the centre.
