Insecurity: NCPC sues for peace in Tiv land, Nigeria

Due to widespread insecurity in different parts of the country, leaders of Tiv community in Abuja have held a one-day summit to find a lasting solution to the menace.

The summit, held Wednesday in Abuja, had as agenda “securing Tiv land, Tiv people and Nigeria: options for Abuja elites” and attracted more than one hundred prominent Tiv sons and daughters residing in the nation’s capital, including ministers and National Assembly members.

In his keynote address, the Executive Secretary of Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Rev. Uja Tor Uja, who is also the chief host of the summit, said that the participants need to come up with solutions to the security challenges being faced by Benue people in particular and Nigeria in general.

He implored government and individuals to stop dignifying kidnapping by paying ransom to kidnappers, as it would discourage them from carrying out such a heinous crime.

He said: “There is no amount of money an individual will make that will be enough if he is threatened by insecurity and inundated with calls from those at home.

Fighting insecurity is a collective effort. It is a national call and not just about Tiv people. We should not leave everything to government. If the IG of police says they are overwhelmed, then we should act in our own way.

“We have ebullient people who can take up the challenge of fostering peace in our nation. We need to have a multidimensional approach to the issues we are facing as a nation, because a bullet does not have regard for religion or ethnicity.”

Also speaking, Chairman NIMASA Board, Major Gen. India Garba (rtd) said that there is a need for value reorientation and for the National Orientation Agency to map out programmes to enlighten parents and children on the way forward at this period of our national life.
