I Will Guarantee Lagosians Right to Information – Jimi Agbaje
Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje has pledged to ensure Lagosians unfettered right to information if elected in tomorrow’s election.
In an electronic mail he said to Daily Times, he said: “The Freedom of Information Bill is an Act that gives every citizen a legal right of access to information, records, and documents held by government bodies and private bodies carrying out public functions. It shall apply to all arms of the Lagos State and Local governments, the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary.
“In order to ensure Transparency in my government, and to create a legal footing to the war against corruption, I shall send to the Lagos State Assembly, a bill domesticating the 2011 Freedom of Information Bill”, Agbaje pledged.
According to him, the current Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) government has consistently refused to do this, thereby hindering Trasparency and Accountability in the affairs of the state.
He assured that once the bill becomes law, it shall ensure that there is proactive disclosure of information from government, promising to set up a central clearing house for all requests to ensure its proper and timely implementation.
“I shall, as Lagos State Governor, side with the people of Lagos State in believing that their elected officials, myself included, should be held accountable, and this bill shall act as a tool, the first of many, that the people will be able use to legally do so,” he stressed.
