Gowon, wife celebrate 56th wedding anniversary, shares secret to a lasting marriage

Former Military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon and his wife, Victoria Gowon, celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary with a thanksgiving service on Easter Sunday at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Maitama, Abuja.
The couple exchanged vows on April 19, 1969, at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina Lagos, during Gowon’s tenure as Nigeria’s Head of State.
Family members, friends, and well-wishers gathered at the thanksgiving service to celebrate the milestone.
Venerable Syrenius Okoriko, Vicar of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, congratulated the couple and offered prayers for continued blessings.
“When they look back, they can only see your faithfulness and your blessings,” Venerable Okoriko said.
“We pray that in the years ahead, God will continue to strengthen them with blessings, sound mind, and divine protection.”
Speaking to the media after the service, the former Head of State and his wife shared timeless principles and personal insights that have kept their union strong for over five decades.
The former leader emphasized that the foundation of their enduring relationship has been faith in God, a deep sense of commitment, and love.
“We’ve been married for 56 years now, and honestly God has been with us throughout,’’ Gen Gowon said.
“I was Head of State when I married her, and even when I went back to school, God has been with us.”
Offering advice to couples, he added: “Love one another. Trust in God. Ask Him to bless your marriage so that it can last. That’s what we’ve been able done and honestly, I thank God.”
Gowon also expressed gratitude to the priests, friends and family members who have supported and encouraged them over the years.
Victoria Gown described marriage as a commitment.
‘‘You take vows on your wedding day, and if you stay true to those vows, you’re prepared for anything—even the toughest challenges. That’s the foundation,’’ she said.
