Governorship Polls: Nasarawa CP Accuse Maku Of Claiming False Victory
The Nasarawa State Police Command has accused a former Minister of Information and governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Nasarawa State, Mr Labaran Maku, of laying false claims to the just concluded governorship election in the state.
The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Mr Sani Mohammed, in a chat with newsmen after keeping vigil in Nasarawa Eggon and Akwanga where Maku’s supporters purportedly gathered to celebrate his victory at the poll, contrary to the result announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stated that such gatherings will cause civil unrest in the state.
Mr Mohammed, who revealed that the state command had received a commendation award from Coalition of Election Monitors, said the former Information Minister had been circulating text messages, claiming he won the election, but the police conspired with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to short-change him.
It would be recalled that Maku had prior to the governorship election in the state, accused the APC-led government of plans to rig the election, using security services and INEC.
Some armed youths attempted to disrupt the collation process in parts of the state and INEC head office in Lafia on Sunday night.
Just as results were announced, supporters of the APGA candidate said they had been denied victory. The result of the false claim and rally the police is accusing APGA of is the unrest that followed.
Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, in the midst of growing concerns following his declaration as winner, urged traditional rulers to help calm their subjects.
Besides meeting the royal fathers, the governor also met with other communities who came to celebrate with him, as he urged them to all work for peace across the state.
