Covid-19/Ramadan: Lagos lawmaker, Abiru reaches Muslim faithful with special packages

The Lagos lawmaker representing Shomolu constituency 02, at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Rotimi Abiru has kept to his tradition of feeding Muslim faithful at his Bariga constituency during the Holy month of Ramadan through his annual iftar programme where thousands of Muslims faithful gather to listen to Islamic Scholars brought in to deliver Ramadan lecture and calls to the right path in the month of Ramadan, despite the COVID-19 lockdown.

However, this year’s arrangement took a different dimension as it coincided  with the COVID-19 global pandemic and the measures put in place by various governments to curtail the fallout among which is the “Stay at home and social distancing” order by the government.

This order temporarily discouraged large group of people coming together for any purpose, be it religious or any social engagements.

To this effect and in keeping with the government directives, “Wiseken”, as Hon. Abiru is popularly called made an arrangements for well over 2500 special packages of take home food items to cushion the effects of the fallout of the trending global virus as well as breaking of fast as it was the annual tradition of the Iftar programne which entered the 13th edition courtesy of Abiru who had, at the beginning of the stay at home order of the Lagos State government made cash transfers to Hundreds of his constituent across the eight political wards in Bariga, Shomolu constituency of the State. A gesture and initiative that was well received and appreciated by beneficiaries constituent.

The cash transfers palliative was consistently followed by series of additional welfare packages for the people to continue to manage the fallout and the negative consequences of the lockdown order by the government on the people, this arrangement is powered by the Lagos lawmaker.

Earlier on Wednesday, Hon. Abiru made provision of Ramadan packages of cash gifts to, Council of Chief Imams in Bariga, Council of Imams Ratibi, the regular Imams within Bariga and environs, The Association of Arabic Teachers, (Dairatul Mualimeen) as well as the, Council of Missionaries (Alasalatu group).

It’s significant to note that the special package arrangements where the representatives of these different Islamic groups come around to access the packages in replacement to the usual gathering for the annual Iftar/Ramadan lecture and feeding of fasting Muslim faithful was in keeping with the social distance order of the government towards curtailing the pandemic in the state and the country as a whole.

It’s also worthy to note that this special arrangement doubled the previous arrangements as this is also meant to cushion the effect of over six weeks lock down.

Hon. Abiru who said he shared in the difficulties being experienced by his constituents as a result of the lockdown however, urged Muslim faithful to use the Ramadan period to pray for peace, unity and economic recovery of the country, while he prayed that together they shall overcome the difficult time and outlive the trending corona virus.
