President Muhammadu Buhari commissioned the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) headquarters building on Thursday, 25 years after the groundbreaking ceremony, commending the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for his tenacity in ending the commission’s years of renting and attendant profligacy.
The land was acquired by the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC) in 1996, and was abandoned after a series of design amendments, according to the President, who virtually commissioned the building from the State House Council Chamber.
While praising the minister for ensuring the building’s historic completion, President Buhari, in a statement released by his special adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, urged the management to reinvest the money spent on rent in more rewarding benefits.

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State thanked President Obama for the building’s completion, promising that the NDDC’s nine governors would continue to support his bold development initiatives.
In his remarks, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs stated that the completion of the NDDC building demonstrates the President’s commitment to the development of the oil-producing region, as well as the end of the activities of corrupt public officials, who for many years refused to connect the offices to the national grid in order to charge rent for generator fuel.
Senator Akpabio urged regional leaders, traditional rulers, and youths to rally behind President Buhari’s administration so that it can complete most of the projects left unfinished by previous administrations, such as the Second Niger Bridge, while also warning that ongoing feuds and petitions among leaders must be put on hold for the sake of development.
