Former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalasmi A. Abubakar (retd.), has enjoined winners of Saturday’s Governorship and House of Assembly elections to be magnanimous enough to embrace losers, with a view to carrying everybody along, so as to sink the roots of democracy, deeper, in the country.
He gave the advice shortly after his accreditation on Saturday, in conjunction with his wife, a former Nigerian First Lady, Hon. Justice Fati Lami Abubakar, at the Up Hill Polling Unit, near his country home, Minna Niger State capital.
Abubakar, who arrived the polling at exactly 11: 02 a.m., said, in an interaction with newsmen, that he was impressed to see the accreditation of the registered voters at the polling unit going very smoothly and fast, while others, who were yet to be accredited conducted themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner .
He, thereby, appealed to Nigerians to cast their votes in an orderly manners for candidates of their choice, while they should also ensure that they maintained peace, adding that the nation could only witness meaning development in an atmosphere of peace.
“I also want to seize this opportunity to thank God for the relative peace in the country, especially since the commencement of the general elections. My appeal to the registered voters is that they should vote for candidates of their choice, whom they can hold accountable for his/her stewardship in office,” he stated.
He however debunked the assertion in some quarters that the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was representing the interest of the Nigerian military class, arguing that those who were saying that were neither being fair to the President-elect nor the Nigerian military as an institution.”
