World Meteorological day: NIMET warns quick rising of water level across coastal areas

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET has warned that the water level across the World ocean including the one along the coastal belt in Nigeria is rising due to changing climate.

The Agency gave the warning at this year’s celebration of world Meteorological Day in Abuja and explained that the implication means an increasing danger of coastal erosions, storm surges, stronger ocean waves and swells exacerbated by global temperature increase.

NIMet noted that the federal govt.has been investing in meteorological data generation both along the coast and inlands as it has over 10 marine meteorological stations along the coastal belt of the country and the data generated are so critical for past assessments and future predictions including nowcasting.

The Agency also explained that the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, NMHSs, Researchers including the Academia around the globe are monitoring the ocean and how it is changing, modeling how it affects the atmosphere in order to deliver services that will support marine, coastal management, weather and climate predictions and Safety of Life at Sea.

NIMET pointed out that Amidst the increasing threat of changing climate including weather and climate extremes, it is essential for the meteorological community to pay more attention to the development of weather and climate services with a special focus on marine and ocean-related activities.

The agency said to support national and regional development, it will continue to
render services to the marine sector including oil and gas, range of products and services cut across all weather and Other climate-related sectors of the economy to keep producing Flood and Drought Bulletins, Seasonal Climate Prediction and the Agency’s meteorological Early Warning System containing rainfall, temperature outlook for the year and possible socio economic implications of the projected weather patterns.

The World Meteriological Organisation Report has shown that the Ocean covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface, performing a major role as a driver of world’s weather and climate, and the global economy, carrying more than 90% of world trade and sustaining the 40% of humanity that lives within 100 km of the coast.

The theme for this year’s World Meteriological Day is “The Ocean, our Climate and Weather” aimed to complete the science of weather For adequate knowledge and reference to the Ocean which plays a critical role in weather occurrence on different timescales as well as changing climate and its variability.
