S/court has no power over people’s culture – Nigerians react to granting of property rights to female child

Following the ruling of the Supreme Court in favour of Cladys Ada Ukeje on Thursday, giving her rights to a share in her deceased father’s properties in negation to the Igbo custom and laws:

Social media users have taken to their accounts to raise different opinions on this news.

Reacting to the news on the Daily Times verified page on Facebook, some persons have said that the Court had no business “interfering” in their culture because “culture is culture”.

When asked by Daily Times if the female Igbo child should inherit properties, Maxwell Ekeson (a Facebook user) replied, “That can never be possible. Supreme court should focus on political matters and stop interfering in people’s culture and tradition”.

Ibrahim Lamech Okehi (a Facebook user) was deeply annoyed by this ruling and in his words, “Supreme Court has no power over people’s culture. To hell with the nonsense supreme court granting female child to inherit family properties”.

However, the same news was met with accolades from some female users like Balogun Omeiza, she said; “The ruling should apply to Nigeria in general & not just Igbo land, female children are being cheated when it comes to inheritance”.
