State Assembly candidate dies on election eve in Niger
An Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) candidate for House of Assembly election in Niger state has lost his life on the eve of the Governorship and State House of Assembly election in Niger state.
It was learnt that Alhaji Adamu Musa Usubu died in an accident in Kontagora town after a meeting with party members on Friday evening.
Alhaji Adamu was the ACD’s candidate for Kontagora II constituency in the Saturday election.
The younger brother to the deceased, Mal Abubakar Musa who confirmed the incident to our reporter on phone said his brother was returning home after the meeting when his vehicle developed fault.
“He had to take a commercial motorcycle to be able to attend to some guests who were already in the house.
“On their way, the motorcyclist ran into a wheel barrow and my brother fell as a result of the impact,” he explained.
According to him, the deceased was crushed to death by a vehicle behind after he had fell.
Speaking on the status of the election for the affected constituency following the death of the candidate, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s Deputy Public Relations Officer in the state, Mal Ibrahim Abari said it was difficult for the Commission to do anything on the matter especially that the accident happened on the eve of the election.
According to him, the party is in contention for the seat, adding that “there is hardly anything the Commission can do in the circumstance especially as the information came rather late.”
