Savannah Centre tasks FG on Security, Citizens welfare

The federal government has been charged to take the issue of security of lives and properties, welfare of citizens and promoting good governance at all level of the economy as its cardinal priorities for the rebuilding of the Nigerian state.
Founder and Chairman, Savannah Centre for Diplomacy Democracy and Development (SCDDD), Professor Ibrahim Gambari, stated this on Thursday in Abuja during his opening remarks at the centre’s second edition of policy monitoring dialogue with the theme: ‘Political Leadership, Governance and National Security.
Prof. Gambari noted that elections are not ends in themselves rather processes leading to the real business of governance which is to promote the security and welfare of the citizens and to provide these, formed the basis for the existence.
“Savannah Centre holds and wishes to promote the strong view that it is only a strong and patriotic political leadership at all levels of governance that would work assiduously in collaboration with the private sector, traditional institutions and religious organisations to guarantee and promote peace, equity, justice and security of lives and properties across the nation which would drive Nigeria’s overall development in the context of a globalizing world,” he said.
He stressed that the objective of the dialogue was to generate more realistic and implementable innovative ideas that will revive the economy, practically leveraging on the nation’s exploitable human and material resources and build capacities from lessons of the past to enhance national unity and promote peaceful coexistence among the multi-ethnic and multi-religious groups of the country.
According to him, the Savannah Centre as an NGO/Think-tank, devoted to policy research/analysis, training and advocacy on issues of national interests, the Centre uses this platform to engage the government and policy community in Nigeria on the key governance issues every quarter, focusing on one thematic issue at a time from which policy brief will be drawn and circulated to relevant government authorities and other stakeholders based on the interventions and recommendations proffered in the dialogue.
“The delivery of democratic expectation is not a task for the political leadership alone. As important and indeed, central to the success of governance as leadership is, every segment of the population has critical roles to play to realize our dreams,” Professor Gambari added.
