Reps member advocates six regional Vice Presidents as calls for restructuring mounts

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon Uzoma Nkem-Abonta has advocated for a home grown system of government that will incorporate the parliamentary and presidential systems that will allow for the emergence of six regional Vice Presidents while supporting the clamour for restructuring to douse the agitations throughout the country.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the lawmaker from Abia State said that the Federal Government should embrace calls for restructuring by adopting a system of government that is a blend of the parliamentary and presidential systems of government, and come out with a system that will address the peculiar problems indigenous to Nigeria.

He stated that restructuring will solidify the shaky foundations on which the nation was built by the British colonial masters, adding that the current structure is flawed because it promotes inequality, inequity and marginalisation.

Commenting specifically on the agitation in the South East, Rep. Nkem-Abonta observed that sustaining the unity and indivisibility of the country requires the enthronement of equity and balance.

“The only way out is to restructure and the various agitations will die naturally. Not running a federal system but a unitary system is responsible for the inefficiency, lack of productivity, inequities and injustice in the nation.

“Since the sharing of the federal cake is based on states and local governments, that’s the reason for the agitations.

“The National Assembly is prepared and competent to restructure Nigeria. The problem is that the present constitution came from the military and we must amend the constitution to address prevailing national agitations.

“The exclusive list of the Federal Government is too loaded that we are having an overloaded exclusive list that needs to be reduced.

The National Assembly can amend the constitution in three months if the willpower is there and satisfy the yearnings of Nigerians.
“We need economic and political restructuring, so that we can have multiple Vice Presidents to oversee the six regions,” he added.
