Nothing wrong with YPP Dewan, as Plateau Speaker – PDP Chair, Hassan, Says

By Kingsley Chukwuka

The Plateau State People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chairman, Hon. Chris Hassan, has said there is nothing wrong with the Young Progressives Party (YPP), producing the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly in the circumstance that warranted his emergence in 2024.

Hassan said the YPP Speaker, Hon, Gabriel Dewan, is doing well and that the members of the Assembly are not complaining.

The PDP Chairman said the most important factor to be considered in State affairs is stability and peace which engenders progress, a factor that all Plateau citizens must key into.

Hassan who spoke to our correspondent on Thursday, was responding to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chairman, Hon. Rufus Bature, who recently called for the emergence of an APC Speaker in the State Assembly given reasons of having 22 members out of 24 Assembly members.

“We should think of the Plateau first. That the APC is more in the Assembly does not mean the winner should take it all.

“In the last Local Government elections, the PDP did not like other States and took all the positions, we allowed other political parties to emerge as councilors.

“That is the Plateau spirit as exemplified by Governor Caleb Mutfwang. The interest is Plateau, the deal is peaceful coexistence and the aim is progress”, Hassan said.

The PDP Chairman regrets the Appeal court judgment that sacked all elected PDP Plateau Assembly members as well as National Assembly members, calling it a miscarriage of justice, adding that the Supreme Court judgment that verified Governor Mutfwang has automatically invalidated the Appeal Court ruling on the Assembly members.

“But that was not the case because we are in a country where miscarriage of justice rules the day. Look at what is happening in Rivers State, how can the court give such a judgment against the Governor, followed by his suspension by President Bola Tinubu?”

“This is what we are saying. If democracy must survive, the rule of law should be allowed to prevail”, he said.

The PDP Chairman lauded Governor Mutfwang for giving the State the long desired leadership, bringing development to all nook and cranny of the State.

“If you come to Plateau today, you will see that there is a government in Place and come 2027, we will recover all our mandate both in the State and National Assemblies”, Hassan said.
