 NIMR set celebrate six years of excellence

The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research is set to celebrate six years of excellence. The event is meant to mark the sixth anniversary of the appointment of Professor Innocent Ujah as the Director General of the institute and how he has restructured and positioned the Institute to response to the health need of Nigerians.

Speaking to newsmen on Tuesday in Lagos to herald this development, the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Professor Innocent Ujah disclosed that; “looking back, we have to thank God for all he has done for us in Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Research is not an easy thing anywhere in the world, must especially in the developing countries of the world. However, here in the institute, we have enjoyed some significant achievement over the years.”

According to him, “the event which is slated for 12th of July, 2016  in Lagos at the Institute’s Auditorium is a symposium on ‘post MDGs: Maternal and Child Health in Nigeria, and will have Professor Oladele Shittu, a Professor of Gynaechology from  the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as the guest speaker.

The Director General pointed out that it is our responsibility to continue to eradicate the cases of death during child birth in Nigeria. No woman should die during child birth he continued, but the case is not like that in Nigeria simply because of poverty, illiteracy and health system. Therefore, at the Institute, we have taken it upon ourselves to continue to organise symposium on how to better our health system which at the end will have a lasting effect on the lives of our people.”

While highlighting some of his achievement as the Director General of the Institute, he said that; “when I resumed office as the Director General of this Institute, we developed a road map which we channelled towards solving common problems of the health of Nigerian people. To this end, we came out with nine research groups headed by very good researchers. We also realised in recent times that there are issues of common death in Nigeria, and we have taken it upon ourselves to conduct research and come out with very good result on how this menace can be curtailed”
