NiMet: Aviation stakeholders are advised to take cautious steps

For seamless and secure operations, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has recommended aviation stakeholders to take cautious steps during the commencement of rainfall, particularly in the north.
Prof. Mansur Matazu, the Director-General of the National Institute of Meteorology, offered the warning to journalists on Friday in Abuja.
Thunderstorms, wind shear, squall lines, microbursts, and flash floods, which accompany the start of the rainy season, he claims, can flood runways and impair landing and take-off.
Professor Matazu went on to say that such activities could cause flight delays and interfere with runway sensors.
“We want the pilots, in particular, to be extremely cautious and follow our safety procedures. They’re there as a matter of course and precaution. You are aware that aviation is all about safety.”
“We use the pilot platform to obtain feedback and learn what people thought about different levels of atmosphere. This precaution should be taken seriously by airline operators as well.”
“Last but not least, travellers should be patient with airline operators, particularly when flights are delayed, diverted, or canceled,” he stated.

Professor Matazu predicted that start will occur between May and June in the Northern zone, with onset in the Northern margins surrounding Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe, and Borno expected between June 14 and June 29.
According to him, NiMet would monitor climate change and offer updates for weather forecast alerts as well as advance plant information.
“We provide early warning for damages, loss of life, and property damage during extreme weather events…”
“So, the North Central is reaching its onset period, and some states in the North will soon begin to see the onset, which is occasionally showers combined with thunderstorms and high intensity wind,” he explained.
