Who is Wilson Unachukwu?
Up until a few years ago, Wilson was almost a no-body as he lived a life of hardship and struggle to feed and clothe himself. After graduating from University of Jos where he studied Sociology, Wilson who earlier attended Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha faced some years of unemployment but the ingenuity in him led Wilson to package a consultancy company which was engaged by the Central Bank of Nigeria. He later travelled to China for a course in renewable energy.
“It was in China that the vision came. I was in China for a course in renewable energy and later combined the programme with a course in software collaboration because in China I saw in practical terms that thinking always produce results,” Wilson told Daily Times in an exclusive interview.
After his training, Wilson stayed back in China and through extra efforts, was able to sign a partnership agreement with Soho, a renowned Japanese technology company that based in China because of cheap labour in the Asian country.
“It was very difficult for me but I had to sacrifice everything I had in 2011 to be able to pay the initial One Million USD to my partners to have my own mole and qualify as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) with my own trademark. That way, all products produced by Soho for my initial company WIBECO Group bear Wilson trademark and in line with Wilson specifications. Therefore, we are a complete Nigerian technology manufacturing company under Japanese technology but with our plant in China currently,” he said.
According to the 48 year old entrepreneur, his second company, Wilson Multimedia Technologies Concept which is a subsidiary of WIBECO Group, through Wilson Technologies and Wilson electronics, is into both hardware and software technologies
“For me, the uniqueness of what we are doing and therefore the joy that comes with it is that these are indigenous Nigerian technologies that have been accepted all over the world as first rate. It is not the same as people travelling abroad to pay money and say make products with inferior characteristics for quick profitability. Our products are as good as the best you can find anywhere in the world,” Wilson said.
On future plans, he said plans are underway to build Wilson Electronics Company which would be an assembling plant where all Wilson products would be assembled for Nigeria and African markets. This he said would materialise in two years from now.
“We already have existing manufacturing company which is purely Japanese technology but based in China. What we need to do within the next two years is to set up an assembling plant in Nigeria to be able to cover indigenous market as well as feed other parts of Africa because Wilson TV, laptop, podium and several other products are already rated as world class and most of the customers that are already using them are testifying of their high quality, even as they are affordable,” he concluded.
