Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN CON FCIArb (UK), yesterday opened the 18th Plenary Session of the Banjul Accord Group (BAG) in Abuja, emphasizing the need for collaboration and innovation in West Africa’s aviation sector.
Keyamo welcomed high-ranking officials, including Directors General of Civil Aviation from BAG Member States and representatives from international aviation organizations. He relayed heartfelt greetings from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, underscoring the importance of the gathering.
During his keynote address, Keyamo highlighted BAG’s significant achievements, such as the establishment of the Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety Oversight Organisation (BAGASOO) and the Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA). These initiatives have strengthened aviation safety and oversight across member states, showcasing the power of regional cooperation.
“Despite limited resources, these institutions have proven that unity can lead to substantial progress,” Keyamo stated. He called for the institutionalization of BAG to create a structured framework that enhances long-term objectives and competitiveness in the region.
The Minister also urged the swift implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), a key element of the African Union’s Agenda 2063. He lamented the slow pace of progress and called for actionable steps from member states.
“Our skies must be defined by open opportunities, not closed borders,” Keyamo asserted, advocating for increased air connectivity to bolster economic growth and regional integration.
Keyamo reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to fostering cooperation and safety within BAG and the broader African aviation landscape. He officially opened the 18th Plenary Session, encouraging delegates to work collectively toward reshaping the future of air transport in Africa.
