Nigeria Breweries and FRSC kick-start Ember months campaigns

Motorists have been advised not to drink if they must drive and not to drive if they must drink. That was the resolution at the flag-off of this year’s edition of don’t drink and drive campaign themed: “Right to life on the highway not negotiable” for the 2017 ‘Operation Zero’ Nigeria that was held at the New Garage, Ojota Motor Park, Lagos on Tuesday.
In his welcome address the representative of the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, Mr. Bisi Kazeem said “The sustenance of this FRSC/NB Campaign in Nigeria which marks its 10th Edition shows Nigerian Breweries Plc (NBP) is not only concerned with the chain of production, distributions, promotion of products, sales, and then profit from its business, but it shows an expression of care for the lives of their customers”.
Oyeyemi said, this campaign therefore, is a timely reminder that drinking and driving does not only pose a threat to the life of the drunk driver, but also to the lives and properties of all road users (motorists, pedestrians, and even animals). Such are still a threat to the state of road infrastructures which costs a lot of resources to produce and mount on the highways and city centres.
“It is instructive to note that drunk driving is not a problem peculiar to Nigeria alone, it is a global concern as the United Nations’ Decade of Action on Road Safety is aimed at reducing fatalities and injuries by 50% come 2020. With this worrisome trend, the bulk of the casualties are our youths who form the economic productive bracket of our great Nation”.
In his own submission, Corporate Affairs Adviser, Nigerian Breweries Plc (NB), Mr. Kufre Ekanem, reiterated his company’s support to ensure that lives are more safe on our roads through their corporate social responsibilities.
The Sector Commander, FRSC, Lagos State Command, Hyginus Omeje, Director of Transport, Operations, Ministry of Transportation, Lagos State, Engr. Akinola Johnson, Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers ( NURTW), Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede and others lauded the programme, they however, admonished the drivers to always ensure that their safety and that of the passengers should be paramount at all time.
