Minimum wage: Gov Obiano gives conditions

Anambra State Governor, Chief Wille Obiano has given conditions of the payment of N30,000 minimum wage for workers in the area. Addressing members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Anambra who held road protest to the Government House, Awka, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Solo Chukwudebelu who spoke on behalf of the Governor noted that government would pay the sum once the Federal Government gives the approval. He also told the workers to vote massively for the All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA in the general election in the state nothing that it would go a long way in encouraging the governor to do the needful. “You all know that His Excellency is a labour friendly governor since he came in to office. Without being prompted he increase the salary of workers by fifteen percent when he came into office and ever since he has settled all arrears of salary that he met when he came into the office’ So he appreciates the need for better condition of service for Anambra workers. I wish to make it clear that when the National Assembly concludes its duties and the Federal Government gives the necessary approvals the governor will do the needful. He will also discuss with labour on a way to fashion out the payment. I also promise to table your demands to the governor when he comes back Speaking earlier, Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Jerry Nnubia said that the workers in Anambra state and the country in general have resolved to vote against any political party in power that refuses to pay the N30,000 minimum wage adding that the minimum wage was the outcome of the meeting between NLC and the Federal Government which had in attendance six state governors . Nnubia noted that labour has no other option but to fight to the realization of the payment of the minimum wage adding that government cannot continue to play politics with the welfare of the workers.
