Man, 35, gets life imprisonment in Ekiti for rape
A 35 years old man, Tope Odeyemi has been sentenced to life imprisonment by an Ado-Ekiti High Court after he was found guilty of rape in Ekiti state.
The convict was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday after the court have been provided with concrete and convincing evidence that he he was guilty of the offence.
The State Attorney General, and Commissioner for justice, Mr. Owoseni Ajayi who led prosecution told the court that Odeyemi and the father of two committed the offence on 4th September, 2014 in Iyin-Ekiti, in the state.
The prosecution addded that the accused, on the said date, sexually assaulted a 27-year-old woman and inflicted grievous bodily harm her which led to her admission in a hospital.
According to him,the offence contravened Section 358 of the Criminal Code, Laws Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.
Though, the convict claimed that the victim was his girlfriend, and because he refused to buy her a BlackBerry phone, lied against him.
However, the prosecution called five witnesses to prove his case while the defence counsel, Mr Taiwo Adeloye called two witnesses in defence of his client.
Odeyemi’s lawyer urged the court to discountenance all the evidence of the prosecution against his client describing them as feeble and porous.
But, the state counsel urged the court to convict Odeyemi based on the evidence laid before the court.
Justice Adekanye Ogunmoye after listening to arguments from both side said based on the confessional statement of the accused and the other corroborative evidence of the prosecution reinforced the conviction,found him guilty as charged.
The judge who observed that the act of rape and defilement is rampant in the state said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other potential rapists in the state.
