Mammoth crowd besiege Glo Laffta Fest in Kubwa, Abuja

It was a sea of heads at the Kubwa, Abuja edition of the Glo Laffta Fest, the comedy show of the foremost telecommunications outfit, Globacom. The show was held at Public Service Institute of Nigeria, Dutsen-Alhaji, Kubwa on Sunday, attracting hundreds of fun seekers in and around the Federal Capital Territory.

Among the dignitaries that graced the flagship show was the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, who thanked Globacom for organising the Glo Laffta Fest show which he described as highly therapeutic.

The show itself was a parade of legion of comedy stars as six celebrated merchant of jokes, led by the Waffi Boy, I Go Dye and seven budding comedians were on call to duty for the entertainment of the guests at the event.

The artistes were splendid as they centred their jokes on contemporary issues bordering on good family life, good governance and citizenship and sundry existentialist problems.

The president’s spokesman, who spoke shortly after the show, described the Glo Laffta Fest as “stylishly organised”.

Hear him: “The Glo Laffta Fest is a show that affords you the opportunity of letting your hair down and relaxing. It has attraction for people of all ages and we have a mixture of old and young people in attendance. The Bible says a merry heart doeth good like medicine, so comedy which elicits laughter is free therapy readily available to all and this healthy living is what Glo is promoting with the show.”

The budding acts who performed at the show included Headmaster Steve, Sergeant Keita, Miracle, Phantom AY, MC Humble Igwe, Charly White and Mr. Steve. Of the lot, MC Humble Igwe was the clear revelation of the night. He came fully prepared with a huge suitcase full of props and delivered hit upon hit of original jokes, beginning with self-deprecating jabs at his own short stature. He left the stage in a blaze of glory.

The show proper began with the Lagos-based prodigious talent, Princewill Odeh, who set a high standard for the rest of the accomplished comics. He devoted the bulk of his jokes to male and female relationship, tickling the audience with virtually every word he uttered.

He was followed by another Lagos-based, hugely talented act, De Don, who also sustained and surpassed the momentum created by the first act. He advocated fidelity in marriage, positing that in addition to religious injunctions, infidelity is costly.

Acapella picked the baton and very rapidly warmed his way into the hearts of the Kubwa, Abuja audience as he has consistently done in other locations where he had performed. Others who performed in quick succession include the well-travelled Buchi, who was performing at the 2017 Glo Laffta Fest for the first time, the comic war horse, Gordons, and the prolific master of comedy, I Go Dye who wrapped up the incredible night of fun on a high note.

Nollywood icons, Mama Gee and Sani Danja, were the guest stars while delectable Juliet Ibrahim and Uche Jombo compered the show.

The next edition of Glo Laffta Fest holds in Ikeja, Lagos this Sunday at 10 Degrees event centre, Oregun. Other cities that will host the show in the weeks ahead include, Makurdi, Ikorodu, Festac, Ajah, Suleja, Ibadan, Kano, Port Harcourt, Lokoja, and Anyigba.

To attend the Ikeja show, Glo subscribers are expected to use up to N2,000 credit within one month and text LOL with the location name to the short code 240; for example, “LOL Ikeja” to 240.
