Lagos records 700 domestic violence cases in one year

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) in Lagos state, Mrs. Lola Akande, has revealed that the state recorded a total of 700 domestic violence cases in 2016 alone.

The commissioner who was addressing journalists on Thursday at the ministerial press briefing to mark the second year in office of governor Akinwunmi Ambode, said there were hardly men among the complainants.

She said her ministry had in place a planning, research and statistics department set up primarily to monitor cases of such violence and ensure follow up and counseling of victims.

Akande said victims of rape are usually taken to the Mirabel Centre in the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) by WAPA, for psychoanalysis, counselling and proper follow up.

She reiterated that the state government was putting in place plans to set up a Skills Acquisition Centre in Agidingbi, Ikeja; in addition to the 17 functional centres spread across the geopolitical divisions of the state.
