Lagos declares zero tolerance for extortion, exam malpractice

*Vows to dismiss teachers involved

Lagos state government has frowned at the ways teachers extort money from parents under the guise of providing infrastructure and facilities for schools of which the administration is committed to.
Deputy governor, Mrs. Oluranti Adebule, made this known at the Annual Education Merit Award held recently at Alausa, Lagos where she vowed that any teacher found perpetuating such act or aiding examination malpractice would be dismissed without any compensation especially those reported by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).
Adebule, who doubles as the Commissioner for Education, said cases of admission racketeering among teachers has been a major concern of Governor Akiwumi Ambode and called on other teachers and non-teaching staff to partner with the state government by reporting those categories of teachers involved in such acts adding that one bad egg spoils the rest.
“Education is the catalyst that drives every other factor towards the realisation of vision and aspiration. The annual merit award had impacted positively on the performance of our students. Reason for the award is to motivate staff and students to break new grounds that will enhance productivity and diligence to duties,” she said.
In his welcome address, permanent secretary of the ministry of education, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi, said the award is in honour of the outstanding performers in the various categories which include Best Head Teacher, Best Principals and Vice Principals in Junior and Senior Secondary schools, Best Schools in Primary, Junior and Senior Secondary schools.
The award according to him also includes best teaching and non-teaching staff, in all categories of schools including special and vocational schools.
“56 recipients received the various awards for this year while the star prize is a brand new CHERY E5, 1.8 litres automatic transmission car goes to the best teacher in the secondary school category”, he said.
Other prizes include refrigerators, power generating plants, grinding machines, desk top computers, laptops among others stressing that this gesture of rewarding excellence is also receiving prime attention and highly motivating as it is aimed at getting the best out of the staff and will ultimately impact on the students positively.
The star prize winner is Mr. Ajanaku Babatunde Fatai from Ojota Senior Secondary School, District 2.
