Lagos boosts traffic management with 4 new intelligent transportation system

BY TEMITOPE ADEBAYO

The Lagos State Government has introduced four additional Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) sites across key locations to enhance road safety and traffic management.

The initiative was announced on Thursday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during a press briefing at Alausa, Ikeja

According to Osiyemi, the expansion aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of a smarter and safer Lagos, integrating advanced technology to improve traffic monitoring and enforcement. The ITS will work alongside Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras and Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices, helping to curb road violations and reduce accidents.

“The newly deployed ITS locations are designed for speed detection and traffic violation monitoring: The Speed Detection Checkpoints are in Alapere, Ogudu Road (Speed limit: 80km/h) Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way (Speed limit: 60km/h).

These checkpoints aim to address over-speeding, which remains a major cause of road accidents in the state. E-Police Sites for Traffic Violation are in Allen Avenue Road Junction, and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road.

“These sites will monitor offenses such as running red lights, lane violations, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways using high-definition cameras, Osiyemi added.”

Also, speaking at the event is the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Tunbosun Alake, stated that the initiative, in collaboration with the private sector, is part of the government’s efforts to make Lagos a technologically advanced and livable city.

He emphasized that leveraging technology in traffic management would enhance safety and promote socio-economic growth.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olawale Musa, clarified that while violators of speed limits and traffic signals will be fined, the initiative is not meant to be punitive. Instead, it is designed to correct bad driving habits and encourage compliance with traffic laws.

Motorists who violate traffic regulations will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), detailing their offenses and the corresponding fines.

“This system is not about punishment but about encouraging responsible driving behavior. Our goal is to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transport system,” Musa said.

The Lagos State Government highlighted several benefits of the ITS, including: Enhanced road safety by discouraging reckless driving.

Improved traffic flow through real-time monitoring and enforcement. Data-driven policy decisions for better urban planning. Increased transparency by reducing human interference in traffic enforcement.

The state government urged all road users, including private motorists, commercial drivers, and transport unions, to adhere to traffic rules. Officials advised drivers to observe speed limits, obey signals, maintain lane discipline, and avoid dangerous maneuvers such as reversing on highways.

The initiative marks another step toward transforming Lagos into a modern, efficient, and technology-driven city, ensuring safer roads for all.
