Ikpeazu urges commission to create virile workforce

Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has called on the Civil Service Commission to create a workforce that is innovative.

Speaking when the management of the commission paid him a visit in Umuahia on Tuesday, Ikpeazu said it could achieve the goal by re-engineering the civil servants.

The governor said that the state government was in need of workers who were compliant to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and would evolve progressive ideas.

He said that the Abia workforce lagged behind in terms of expectation, speed, efficiency and dedication.

“Idleness, underutilisation and poor assignment of duties are the bane of the civil service as one can hardly find interrelationship between ministries, departments and agencies,” he said.

Ikpeazu noted that recent trends portrayed that Abia might have seen the last of good civil servants that upheld the principles of evaluation, total value management and mentorship.

“We have gotten to a point where civil servants have developed apathy for their job and this is encouraging a vicious cycle that yields poor productivity.

“We are looking for civil servants that are innovative and will provide solutions for every situation,” he said.

Ikpeazu emphasised the need for continuous training of civil servants to enable them add value to governance and people’s lives.

Earlier, the Chairman of the commission, Mr. Vin Nwogwugwu, said it had a vision to transform the civil service to a place where justice and hard work were upheld.

Nwogwugwu said that the leadership of the commission would live up to expectation, adding that the commission was poised to encourage a healthy relationship between the state government and civil servants.
