Why Group Vowed Not To Recognise Newly Elected CAN President

A group under the aegis of Concerned Northern Christians Of Nigeria has hitherto vowed not to recognise the newly elected President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Supo Ayokunle, who emerged as CAN boss recently.

The group had earlier disassociated itself from the election that brought Rev. Supo Ayokunle to head the apex Christian body in the next for years.

It claimed that a section of the northern bloc, known as the TEKAN/ECWA bloc was schemed out of the election, a bloc that was suppose to produce the next CAN President.

However, the ECWA President, Rev. Jeremiah Gado, who was tipped by the bloc as the flag bearer for the election has hitherto dragged the body of CAN that conducted the election to court sighting exclusion and demanding an injunction to stop the outgoing CAN President, Pastor Oritsejeafor from handing over to Rev. Supo Ayokunle.

In a statement signed by the leader of the group, Rev. Luka Shehu and made available to our correspondent, it stated that, “what happened on Tuesday 20th July, 2016 at the Christian Center where Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor handed over CAN to Rev. Supo Ayokunle was contrary to CAN constitution and the greatest travesty of justice. Therefore, we the concerned Christians of Nigeria in the North renounce every process of the June 14thN 2016 election”.

However, in a swift reaction, the Public Relation Officer of CAN in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, while speaking with our correspondent on phone, refuted the claim and said it stands by the newly elected CAN national President and that the Northern CAN in all the 19 states are still part of CAN.

Rev. Hayab equally called on the group to shield their sword and ensure dialogue for better for understanding and harmonious working relationship for all Christians in the country.
