Ukpono Ukpong, Abuja
As part of preparations for the forthcoming general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a sensitisation programme for corps members in FCT, who are scheduled to participate in the exercise. Addressing the corps members yesterday in Abuja, the FCT INEC Admin Secretary, Mr. Nick Dazang, urged the corps members to remain worthy ambassadors of the scheme as the whole world is looking up to them as the success and otherwise of the exercise lies on their shoulder. Dazang said the Corps members have been trained earlier on how to go about their task but the sensitisation programme was to remind them and get them familiar with what they would be expected of on the field. While promising adequate security for the corps members, before, during and after the elections, he appealed to them to allow themselves to be used to make history as this election was a moment to be used to define history in Nigeria. Speaking further, he urged them to educate the voters on the procedures of voting on the elections day hence, they should read their manuals to guide them while carrying out their task on the field. On his part, Director General of the scheme, Major General Suleiman Kazaure through the Assistant Director, Human Resources of the scheme, Mrs Grace Ogbuogebe urged the corps members not to do anything that will bring bad name to the scheme while carrying out their duties. The DG cautioned the corps members to be vigilant while on duty even as he gave the assurance that adequate security has been put in place to ensure their safety during the exercise. Furthermore, Kazaure warned the corps members against receiving any form of gratification from any politician or political party as well as compromising in any form. In case of any threat of insecurity, he urged them to call on their state coordinator or any number of the security agencies provided to them. Speaking to the Corps Members, FCT NYSC Coordinator, Mr Bello Ballama appealed to the corps members to be worthy ambassadors of the scheme and urged them not to receive any food or edible gratification from any one as they could be poisoned.
