GAIN hosts National Consultative Summit on Food Fortification

The National Fortification Alliance (NFA) in collaboration with Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and UNICEF will on Tuesday, May 10 at the Protea Hotel Ikeja, Lagos hold a National Consultative Summit on Food Fortification #NigeriaFutureFortified.
The Summit, with the theme, “Sharing our Successes and Challenges: Align on the way forward” is aimed at reviewing country successes and challenges of food fortification and examining the contextual factors which drive reach, impact and sustainability. The Summit will also discuss the latest evidence on health and nutrition impact and its implications for improving programming.
Other technical partners who will be playing leading role at the Summit include the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, Oxford Policy Management (OPM), the Micronutrient Initiative (MI), and Maverick Equinox Ltd. The National Agency for Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) will also play a major role at the Summit.
This National Consultative Summit on Food Fortification, #NigeriaFutureFortified, is a follow-up to a 3-day Global Summit on food fortification held in Arusha in 2015 to reinvigorate interest, awareness and investment in fortification of staple foods with vitamins and minerals as an effective intervention delivering sustainable impact on nutrition security and public health.
The summit will consist of series of technical and practical sessions presenting updates, constraints, and latest evidence regarding food fortification. There will be panel discussions and plenary sessions with leading experts from various disciplines. Over 50 senior representatives from across the nation are expected to attend, including governments, business, international organizations, academia, donor agencies, and civil society.
At the end of the summit, stakeholders are expected to align on major tasks to be completed with respect to food fortification; identify national leaders and champions; catalyse partnerships and resources; and ensure that food fortification programmes are expanded, improved and sustained in health and development efforts.
