Female doctor found dead in Akwa Ibom
Mystery surrounds the death of a 44-years-old femle medical doctor, Ivy Umanah at her residence in Shelter Afrique Extension, Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
The deceased who hails from Ndon Eyo in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa-Ibom State was found dead in her sitting room on the 22nd April 2016, two days after she was declared missing.
The Daily Times gathered that late Dr. Ivy before her death had been in medical practice for over 20 years and was head of Histopathology Department of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
She was said to have been declared missing after she did not show up to officiate over a resit examination for Part IV medical students of the College of Health Sciences, University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, and all efforts made to reach her proved abortive.
A close associate of the deceased who spoke to our correspondent in confidence narrates gave details to the sad incident. “Dr. Ivy was supposed to conduct an examination for the part IV medical students of the College of Health Sciences on the 20th April 2016. The scheduled time for the commencement of the examination was9.00 am, but by 10:30 am, the deceased was nowhere to be found and no word was received from her.
“At this point, the external examiners were restless and the coordinator for the exams tried repeatedly to get her on her mobile phone without success. Subsequently a text message was received via her phone, informing the external examiners that she was in a meeting. Further calls to the phone found it switched off. It was at this point that we felt something was wrong, because the Dr. Ivy we know would never do that.
“We went to her residence and met one carrying her television and holding the keys to her car so we cajoled Henry into joining our vehicle and he agreed not knowing that we were suspecting something fishy so we took him to the Divisional Police Station at Shelter Afrique Extension.
“We had to contact her family and they took a step further, to make formal complaint on the 21st April 2016 at the police headquarters where they were directed to a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). After explaining what had transpired at the Shelter Afrique Police Station, the DCP requested the presence of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Shelter Afrique Police Station and the Officer-in-Charge of anti-robbery unit. The DPO when asked about the issue informed the DCP that he was not aware of the details of Henry as he was not on duty when the incident happened.
“The DPO later informed the DCP that his men claimed there was such an incidence the day before and the deceased house bunch of keys, three of her ATM cards and her car keys were found on the floor of the station in the morning of the 21st April, 2016. The DCP ordered the DPO to arrest Dr. Festus Abasiubong and that he must produce Henry for questioning. Dr. Festus Abasiubong who later reported at the police division as ordered claimed he did not know Henry’s residence or how to locate him.”
Information had it that on the 22nd April 2016, the family decided to go to the deceased’s house with the keys obtained from the police, in company of some police officers. There they found Dr. Ivy stone dead in the sitting room of her home.
When The Daily Times contacted the Police Public Relations Officer of the Akwa-Ibom State Police Command, ASP Cordelia Nwanwe, to confirm the story, she said, “We may not be able to give out information concerning the death of Ivy Umanah, because we are still doing intensive investigations. We have suspects in custody but will not want to give out their names but as I speak with you, Akwa Ibom State Police Command has a detailed investigating team led by ACP in State Criminal Investigation Department. When we finish with our investigations the world will know what happened to Ivy Umanah as the Commissioner of Police, CP Murtala Mani, will speak regarding this issue, so be patient with us,” she said.
