Election observers make case for increased voter education

Some election observers today Abuja called for increased sensitisation programmes to educate voters on all aspects of the electoral process. This is in spite of the large turn-out of voters across the country for the presidential and national assembly elections.
According to Tony Nwokocha of Global Policy Advocacy and Leadership Group, while the arrangement by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was thorough, “some voters are yet to understand the process,” he said. “The process is excellently peaceful and healthy with all the stakeholders conducting themselves orderly. I am impressed with the turnout as people came out early and participated actively except in some cases where some voters displayed ignorance of the process.
“So, with the enthusiasm demonstrated by Nigerians today, there is need for increased voter education for people to understand the electoral process.
“Some people were just taught how to cast their votes, while some people came by 3 p.m. to vote. It could be that the education was not effectively disseminated or that some people fail to assimilate the message,” Nwokocha said. On his part, Adzege Ushana of Orderly Society Trust said that many voters were confused with the process as there were some clumsiness.
