Democracy Day: NGO urges citizens to keep faith with Nigeria

De Norsemen Kclub International, a Non-governmental Organisation (NGO), has urged Nigerians to sustain their patriotic zeal by upholding virtues that would foster and strengthen national unity.
This is contained in a statement jointly issued in Abuja on Sunday by Mr Tony Eteng and Mr Akpante Marshal, the National President and Publicity Secretary of the group, respectively.
It appealed to all Nigerians to cooperate with the elected and unelected leaders to enhance the spirit of love and peace among the people toward bridging religious and ethnic divides.
“The path taken to reach this moment of freedom (Democracy) has not been one of easy victory sacrifices for Nigerians heroes of many years back.
“This day (Democracy Day) deserves to be celebrated in every circumstance.
“We appeal to all Nigerians to keep faith with our country on issues that will unite the nation and deepen our democracy to deliver peace, social justice, development and prosperity to everyone.
“We urge Nigerians to support their leaders, reject ethnic or religious bigotry and embrace the spirit of love, responsibility and patriotism to fellow Nigerians,’’ it said.
The group noted that while Nigerians celebrate Democracy Day, they should support the government’s effort aimed at enthroning transparency and accountability by eradicating the scourge of corruption in the country.
It urged the government to maintain constant communication with the people in order to gain their support and understanding for policies and programmes aimed at positively impacting on the citizenry.
“Democracy can only make meaning when the people understand their powers to demand accountability, due process and transparency in how government manages revenues accruing from our natural resources.
“We, therefore, call for deliberate measures to strengthen all anti-corruption agencies with necessary capacity, legal framework and political will to discharge their responsibilities without interference.
