Delta poly lecturer dies in auto crash, 2 others fatally injured

A lecturer with the Delta state Polytechnic, Ozoro in Isoko North Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday evening died in an auto crash.
It was gathered that the lecturer, Mr. Akpituren America until his sudden death, was a lecturer at the department of civil engineering at the polytechnic unfortunatelyrammed into a stationary vehicle on his way to a friend’s house.

Sources said that America was also the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Delta state chapter, adding that he was patron, National Association of Itsekiri Students, National Association of Aniocha- Oshimili Students (NAAOS) Delta state Polytechnic, Ozoro, respectively.
It was further gathered that the accident involved Akpituren’s vehicle, a Toyota Highlander Jeep belonging to the polytechnic ASUP with registration number DT 348A06 and a blue coloured truck conveying goods to an unknown destination.
“We suspected cause of the accident was due to brake failure by both the truck and SUV,” his colleague who did not want his name mentioned said.
But, when contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Boniface Ogaraya, who confirmed the incident said: “It’s so painful that we lost Mr. Akpituren America to a fatal accident along the Ogwashi Uku/ Asaba Expressway. I am not still clear of the cause of the accident.”

Meanwhile, an 18-seater bus plying Asaba- Benin Expressway in the early hours of Wednesday crashed into a pick-up truck after Issele Uku community while allegedly on top speed.
It was gathered that the driver of the 18-seater bus with registration number AA346 SL while on top speed, crashed into the stationary pick-up truck.
“Fortunately, no life was lost, but the occupants of the bus sustained injuries and were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba for treatment,” he said.
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the accident occurred as a result of over- speeding.
