Chiwetalu Agu Dispels Death Rumours, Assures Fans He Is Alive and Well

Veteran Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, has debunked reports circulating on social media that he had passed away, assuring fans and family members that he is alive, healthy, and not going anywhere soon.

The legendary actor, known for his comic delivery and witty proverbs in films, addressed the rumours in a video shared on his Instagram page on Friday. In the clip, Agu appeared energetic and confident, introducing himself as “Chief Chiwetalu Agu, Okenmiri n’ezoru Oha 1 of Etiti Amokwe, Enugu State,” and dismissing claims of his death as baseless and malicious.

“Fans and family, please disregard any rumors about my death, and kindly report the page of the blogger who started spreading them. I am very much alive by God’s grace,” the 68-year-old actor declared.

Agu went further to emphasize that he still has many milestones ahead of him, including the joy of seeing and carrying his grandchildren. “Instead, I will be the one to bury my enemies. Na who dig pit go fall inside. Na who dig grave go fall inside. I am yet to carry my grandchildren and I must carry them in good health when my children are ready,” he said in his characteristic dramatic style.

The death hoax had earlier spread widely on Facebook and other platforms, with posts claiming Agu had died after battling diabetes and undergoing surgery. The false report quickly went viral, sparking a wave of sympathy messages before the actor personally refuted it.

The actor’s decision to appear in a video was deliberate. By showing himself visibly strong and in high spirits, Agu ensured fans could not doubt his wellbeing. His sharp words also served as a warning to rumour peddlers who exploit celebrity names to chase online traffic.

In his video statement, Agu hinted that he considered legal action if the misinformation had come from a prominent media outlet. According to him, if a major blogger had carried the fake story, he would have sued for defamation, economic loss, and damage to his brand. However, he brushed off the originator as a small-time blogger “still struggling with likes.”

His reaction underlines the frustration many Nigerian celebrities face as social media becomes a breeding ground for false news. Several Nollywood stars, musicians, and public figures have had to debunk premature death announcements in recent years.

Shortly after Agu’s video surfaced, the comment sections of entertainment blogs were filled with relief from fans and colleagues alike. Many expressed gratitude that the actor took the time to address the rumour, while others called for stricter penalties against bloggers and social media users who spread unverified news.

For over three decades, Chiwetalu Agu has been a household name in Nollywood, famed for his mastery of proverbs, biting humour, and memorable roles as both a villain and comic relief. His assurance of being alive and well will come as a huge relief to admirers who grew up watching him dominate screens in the golden age of Nigerian cinema.

As Agu himself put it: he is not leaving the stage anytime soon. Instead, he plans to live long, enjoy his family, and continue entertaining audiences who cherish his unique contributions to Nollywood.
