Anambra attack: Police recover 8 Riffles, live ammunition

Seven Toyota Hilux vans belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were burned down in the attack on their facility in Anambra State on Sunday night, according to a final check.

The commission’s data center and shop, which housed over 50 generating sets and other equipment, were also destroyed by fire.

CP Chris Owolabi, the Anambra State police commissioner, who led journalists to the affected facility to inspect it, said the police had a 90 percent success rate in fighting the attackers.

The three Hilux vans used by the attackers were abandoned after police operatives matched them with greater firepower.

“The hoodlums first went to “B” division police station and were repelled, then they came to INEC and our men repelled them as well,” Owolabi told journalists.

“I can inform you that we had around a 95% success rate. The police suffered no injuries in the incident. I’d like to appeal to media to report carefully because we’ve seen reports that dozens of police officers have been killed.

“Since last night, we have been moving from hospital to hospital, because we are sure some of the attackers escaped with serious wounds. We are appealing to hospital management to help us track them.

“I want to plead with Anambra people to go about their legal activities.”

The attackers were found with eight rifles, including an AK-47 and a pump-action, as well as live ammunition, clothes, and berets.
