A/Ibom to buy 5, 000 Maths textbook for public schools

Worried by the poor performance of Akwa Ibom indigenes in Mathematics in West African Examinations Council examinations, Governor c Emmanuel has approved the purchase of 5, 000 copies of principles of Mathematics textbook for distribution to public secondary schools in the state.

The approval was contained in a letter addressed to the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Victor Inoka for the immediate order of the textbooks to be distributed to students in public secondary schools across the state.

In an interview, the Special Assistant to Governor Emmanuel on Education Matters, Mrs. Aniema Etiebet said the governor’s gesture was aimed at advancing the free and compulsory education initiative of the state government.

Mrs. Etiebet recalled the poor ranking of Akwa Ibom students in Mathematics in the last four years in WAEC examinations and applauded Governor Emmanuel for his generosity which she said would help students to study the subject and excel in future examinations.

She said apart from helping the students, it would also improve and increase female students’ enrolment in engineering and other science oriented courses in tertiary institutions and further reposition the state in line with the United Nations girl child science education programme.

Mrs. Etiebet explained that Governor Emmanuel’s free and compulsory education has been strengthened not only by training and retraining of teachers for effective service delivery, but addressing infrastructural deficit in public schools.

In addition to books, she listed other school facilities provided by Governor Emmanuel to include renovation of school buildings, provision of writing desks and office accommodation for staff in schools among others.

The Governor’s aide maintained that the approval for book procurement and distribution to schools would position the state among the best ranking performance states in Mathematics instead of the poor rating as obtained in the past.
