Lagos, Nigeria – 1952 Africa, a pioneering organization empowering emerging African artists, proudly announces two exciting events as part of Lagos Art Week: the exclusive 1952 Africa Collectors’ Evening and the highly anticipated Public Opening of the Divergence Exhibition.

A Celebration of African Artistic Excellence

On Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, the 1952 Africa Collectors’ Evening event which will bring together influential art collectors, curators, philanthropists, and key stakeholders in the African art ecosystem for a meaningful celebration of art, inspiration, and community. At the 1952 Africa Gallery, attendees will experience the remarkable works of artists from the foundation’s renowned creative residency program.

This evening will be particularly special because the legacy of beloved board member, the late Chizi Wigwe, would be honoured. In remembrance of his profound impact on the 1952 Africa community, the Chizi Wigwe Prize for African Futurism will be launched; a prize with the aim of empowering visionaries who, like Chizi, are dedicated to shaping a bright and hopeful future for African creativity. His passion, generosity, and enduring support for artists have left an indelible mark on the entire organization, and through this prize, the foundation will continue his mission of fostering artistic innovation and cultural expression.

Africa’s Contemporary Art Scene

On Sunday, November 3rd, the Divergence Exhibition will open to the public, showcasing the works of the current cohort of the 1952 Africa Art Accelerator. This exhibition offers the general public an opportunity to engage with the creative voices shaping Africa’s contemporary art. Visitors can explore a wide array of themes and perspectives that highlight the continent’s rich cultural diversity. The exhibited works will reflect each artist’s growth throughout the residency, offering insight into their individual creative processes and how the residency has influenced their practices.
