COVID-19: FCT minister orders restrictions on commercial, business activities

As part of measures to curb the spread of the dreaded COVID-19 in the nation’s capital, the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, has ordered that all business and commercial activities within the FCT must henceforth open by 6.am and close by 9.pm.

Malam Bello gave the order on Thursday during a press conference, even as he constituted a monitoring team to ensure full compliance by residents.

He said in the bid to further enforce social distancing, the FCTA also ordered all eateries to withdraw all seating arrangements in their premises, noting that only takeaway packs will be allowed so the customers can eat at home.

According to him, this will discourage the convergence of customers at one particular spot even as he encouraged them to embrace home delivery as a service alternative.

“Business and commercial activities will be restricted within the FCT from 9.pm to 6.am. This is to as much as possible restrict unnecessary movement and congregation of people especially at night which is dangerous to all of us.

“It’s very important for monitoring team to be set up so that those that have refused to comply must comply because we will not allow very few to put the lives of all of us to in the FCT in jeopardy.

“Accordingly, five monitoring teams have been constituted and these are to check and monitor parks, event centres, night clubs, restaurants and markets. The second is to ensure compliance in motor parks, bus terminals and within buses and taxis.

“The third one is to enforce compliance in places of worships while the fourth team will ensure compliance in educational institutions. All these teams will also be constituted in respective Area Councils by their Council Chairmen.

In order to ensure the effective coordination of all activities on the containment of COVID 19, the FCTA has also established the COVID 19 Situation Room to be domiciled at the FCT Call Centre whose telephone numbers are: 08099936312, 08099936313, 08099936314, 07080631500, Bello stated.
