UNICEF charges Anambra communities to promote healthy environment

The two day media tour by the UNICEF Water Supply and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) to borehole facilities across the state has ended with a call to communities to always maintain good and healthy environment.

The tour which kicked off in Aguata Local Government Area and ended in Anambra East recently with a visit to Premier Primary School Aguleri, Primary Health Care Centre Otuocha, Community Primary School Nsugbe, Amumu Nsugbe water project as well as Umuanevili Eziagulu water project, Aguleri, among others, witnessed a great turn around in the health reform of the people, as both the pupils, nursing mothers and entire communities sang praises to God for the benefits of the projects by UNICEF.

Welcoming the Media team to Anambra East Local Government Area, the Transition Committee Chairman of the Council, Honourable Pius Ifeadi, acknowledged that the activities of UNICEF are not hidden as it has continued to tackle the challenges faced by the rural dwellers and applauded Governor Willie Obiano who has remained committed to the payment of the state counterpart fund.

While expressing delight with the people of Anambra East for maintaining good hygiene around their facilities, the State Consultant Water Sanitation and Hygiene for Anambra East, Mrs. Amina Omihie explained that the media help to ascertain the present state of all projects by UNICEF and level of impact in the host community and assured that UNICEF through WASH will do more to ensure that the Local Government is declared open defecation free.

The UNICEF Media Consultant in Anambra state, Mrs. Franca Mmaduike, said that the tour has brought to light the various landmarks recorded by UNICEF in collaboration with Governor Obiano and reminded the people of the need to take ownership of all the projects in their localities.

Speaking to journalists in their respective communities, Obi Gabriel Anozie from Amumu Nsugbe and Mrs. Angela Nwabuo from Umuanevili Eziagulu Aguleri, recalled the ugly experiences the community passed through in the past noting that the projects have given the areas great upliftment as it recorded giant development, praying God to bless them.

When journalists visited Premier Primary School Aguleri, the students were seen using the tippy tap which they said have been their daily routine, but the case was different at Community Primary School Nsugbe were pupils are denied access to their tippy tap as they are facing challenges with water supply because the borehole facility has been vandalised.
