Two arrested over the assassination of Ogun monarch

Two persons have been detained in connection with Wednesday gruesome murder of a second class traditional ruler in Ogun state, Oba Patrick Oyeniran Fasinu, the Olowo of Owo, in Yewa South local government area of the sate.
Those detained according to an eyewitness were the personal driver of the deceased and one Bolaji who was nabbed at Ogbo Village near Ipokia in Ipokia Local government area of the State.
It could be recalled that Oba Patrick Fasinu was assassinated last Wednesday by unknown gunmen while returning from Yewa Traditional Council meeting in Ilaro.
It was learnt that after his assassination along Ijako-Isagbo road in Oke-Odan, Yewa South Local Government, the gunmen also set his corpse ablaze.
Speaking during his interrogation before the Baale of Ogbo, Ipokia local government area, Bolaji, who was nabbed while coming out from a swampy forest near the village, claimed to have missed his way after he and his gang had murdered the royal father.
The suspect, who said he was a motor boy, claimed to have come from Ajangbadi area of Lagos state also revealed that those who sent them had given the gang order to kill and burn the corpse of the royal father.
He was later handed over to the police from Ipokia Division of the police force before been transferred to Ilaro, Ogun state.
Speaking with journalists at the Olowo Palace, in Owo, the younger brother to the deceased, Prince Olaolu Mathieu Fasinu, said that those who perpetrated the act are inhuman and devilish.
He revealed that for almost 13 years since the royal father was enthroned, it had been one crisis or the other.
According to him, “there are crisis within the Anagos and the Ogus, and the taken over of some portion of land by the State government for agricultural purposes.
“There is a case in court now involving kabiyesi and some people in the town on the allocation of farm settlement and payment of compensations.”
The allegation was that kabiyesi had collected money as a form of compensation from government without releasing same to the original land owners. The case is in the High Court, Ota now.”
Also a high Chief in the town Chief Adetunji Iroko, described Oba Fasinu as an epitome of humility, a good mixer with progressive ideas praying that those who perpetrated the act should be brought to book
‘It is very cruel, nobody would ever thought that Kabiyesi would be treated in such an inhuman way, I am sure the government would not fold its arm and allow those who perpetrated this kind of crime go unpunished.”
Speaking with the Daily Times on the arrest, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the driver of the royal father was arrested based on the claim that he was the last person that saw the monarch. He said he had not been briefed on the Bolaji’s arrest.
“It is the homicide section that is handling the case, and it will be on Monday that they will brief us on how far they have gone, but, that of the driver, I am aware of.”
